You’ve probably seen people who talk about prolonged fasting throw around words like ‘autophagy’ and ‘ketosis’. You probably also know you can lose heaps of weight super quickly by not eating for a long time (who would have thought).
But there is actually a very long list of benefits when it comes to prolonged fasting, most of which people aren’t aware of. So let’s take a look at a few of my favorites!
1. Gratitude & Appreciation: The Ability To See The Beauty In The Small Things
When you’ve been fasting for a couple days or so, you will experience a huge surge of endorphins. Life all of a sudden becomes really beautiful. The grass is greener, the sky is bluer, and it’s not uncommon to experience a dull, lingering euphoria.
You feel more grounded, more connected to nature, more present. You’re happy, for absolutely no reason.
I don’t have any data to prove this, but I often wonder whether extended fasting protocols could help alleviate the symptoms of depression. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if this was the case.
I also find that my morning walk is completely different when I’m deep into a long fast.
When I’ve not been fasting, I need the constant stimulation in the form of podcasts or music. I feel somewhat bored and irritable when I’m on that walk if I don’t have my headphones with me.
When I’m on a prolonged fast, simply walking in nature is enough. I don’t feel my brain begging for that dopamine hit like it does when I’m not fasted. And the walk is more enjoyable this way, too.
2. Sense Of Being In Possession Of A Superpower
When you’re 5 days into an extended fast, you can’t help but feel like you have a leg up against everyone else. It feels like the world is full of mere mortals, peons, dependent on the life-support machine of sustenance for survival.
But not you. You have unlocked an arcane form of self-reliance. You feel a sense of independence that is unrivalled.
The truth is, most people think you can’t go a week without food before you’ll drop dead. And if you were to ask them if they’d bet whether you could go 1-2 weeks with no water, I’m sure you could find some people willing to bet good money!
In modern humanity, outside of some religious circles, most people won’t go a day in their lives without food.
When you’re walking around in public 7 days into a fast, you start to imagine what it’d be like to be Spiderman. What would it be like to look completely normal but have access to an amazing ability that no one suspects you have?
You start walking around like, “do you guys know who I am!? I literally don’t eat. Why aren’t you amazed!?”
Sure, the superpower of not needing to eat isn’t as cool as being Spiderman, but it really does feel like a genuine superpower!
3. The Ability To Cure Addictions
I know for a fact that fasting for 3 or more days will cure food and dopamine addiction.
If you suffer from severe cravings for certain foods, you can destroy them completely in 3 days.
When I was addicted to eating pizza, every other day like clockwork, I would experience excruciatingly powerful pizza cravings. All I could think about was eating pizza. Which made dieting really difficult.
I’m a fairly disciplined person for the most part, but my willpower was absolutely no match for the pizza cravings which had sunk their hooks deep into my dopamine receptors.
Unable to go more than 1.5 days without being plagued by the desire for pizza, I was in every sense, addicted to food.
After I fasted for 3 days, I didn’t even think about pizza for 3 weeks. And when I did, I was able to stop thinking about it almost immediately.
I am very interested in doing an experiment on myself at some point where I start smoking a pack a day for a couple weeks, or until I am well and truly addicted to nicotine. I then want to see if performing an extended fast can cure that addiction long term.
I don’t have the data yet but I have a strong feeling that extended fasting can be used to cure all sorts of addictions!
4. You Will Become More Attractive
People naturally gravitate towards those who are capable of doing hard things.
If you can decide to dry fast for 5+ days and then complete the fast successfully, it builds character. A lot of it.
People can sense when they’re in the presence of someone who has that degree of self-sufficiency, determination, and strength.
Weak people cannot perform difficult tasks, and it reeks.
5. Amazing Skin
Fasting has been known at least anecdotally to drastically improve how your skin looks. Fasting is thought of as a natural moisturizer and antioxidant all-in-one.
Many people have reported having their eczema completely cured from dry fasting. Many people found their acne improved massively.
I’ve personally noticed that I have really amazingly clear skin when on any sort of fast.
6. It’s An Organ Pressure Washer
When you fast for days on end and you see what comes out of you, it is quite shocking. I’m talking dark black, tarry looking stool. This is literally rotting fecal matter that has been piling up inside of you.
You may also notice sediment in your urine.
Your kidneys are doing some serious spring cleaning. You’ll sometimes feel them aching on a long fast because of how hard they’re working.
A long fast is giving your body the ultimate opportunity to cleanse, rest, and reset. Your gut, liver, skin, stomach, kidneys – everything is going to be overhauled from the inside out. Your body will thank you for it.
7. It’s The Ultimate Nootropic: Unparalleled Focus
Fasting will give you the ability to be creative and remain focused on cognitively draining tasks. If your work involves a lot of thinking or being creative, wait til you see how laser sharp you’ll be when you’re in a fasted state.
If you’re a writer and you’re not leveraging fasting to improve your writing output, you are seriously missing out!
8. It Tests Your Character
Going on a 5+ day extended fast will teach you a lot about yourself. You’ll find out where your limits are, what your fears are, and how willing you are to face them.
It’s a tough thing to decide to do something like this for a week, when you’re the only one holding yourself accountable. You know you can quit at any moment and no one will care.
And yet despite this, you continue torturing yourself. The sense of accomplishment you’ll feel at the end truly makes it all worthwhile.
9. It Can Be A Spiritual Experience
Not eating or drinking for days on end is, by its very nature, a spiritual undertaking. It’s a great opportunity to develop your taste for meditation, contemplation, and appreciation.
It’s a great opportunity for thinking, for introspecting, and for sometimes doing absolutely none of that, by just being fully immersed in the present moment.
10. It Is The Quickest Way To Lose Fat Known To Man
Actually it’s quicker than that.
Believe it or not, it’s actually safe to work out still while on an extended fast, if you’re smart about it. In my upcoming 7 day water fast, I will work out for each of the 7 days. Not just fluffing around in the gym either; we’re talking proper workouts here!
I understand, as many don’t, that it’s okay to push yourself on an extended fast, and I know how to do it safely. As a result, I’m going to lose a lot more weight while maintaining more muscle than most people would if they chose to just sit at home all day.
Over the course of the year I’ll be performing a number of 30 day fasts to show how much weight it’s possible to lose on aggressive fasting protocols. And it’s a lot more than most people think!
11. You’ll Be At The Forefront Of An Emerging Science
There’s astonishingly little research into the topic of prolonged fasting. Most doctors tell people not to even think about it without being under constant medical supervision. Those same doctors likely haven’t looked at any of the research in the field either.
It’s no wonder some cranks think there’s a conspiracy within big pharma to suppress the power of certain naturopathic practices, especially ones like prolonged fasting! There’s literally no money to be made when you stop eating and give your body a chance to heal itself!
The good news is, more research is being done and we’re slowly unveiling the truth about this ancient practice.
By practicing prolonged fasting, you automatically join the exclusive club of individuals who are exploring the boundaries of what it means to participate in the human experience.
