I’m constantly seeing people asking whether this or that breaks their fast. Sometimes it can be tricky to know immediately whether you should consume something on a fast or not.
So I decided to create the ultimate list of “will it break my fast” type questions and answer them all in one place.
General Rules For Whether Something Will Break Your Fast
Once you understand this stuff, in 95% of cases, just using common sense will lead you to a pretty good answer about whether you can consume something or not.
<50 Calories Is Weak!
Calories are really the only thing that determine whether something is going to technically break your fast or not. Most beginners subscribe to the philosophy of ‘if it contains <50 calories, it’s fine to eat’. But if you’re eating 40 calories a day, you’re still providing your body with exogenous fuel and interrupting the processes we’re trying to engage by fasting in the first place.
I always recommend to do it right. Don’t have any calories at all. Let’s get the most out of our fasting period!
That said, even though technically black coffee and tea have some calories, it’s so negligible that it really won’t have any impact. I suppose a better rule is to keep it to <5 calories per day!
What’s The Purpose Of Your Fast?
Maybe you want to be more relaxed when it comes to how many calories you’re going to allow yourself to have during the fasting period. In some cases, depending on what you’re eating, this may actually be okay. But it’s important to understand why you’re doing the fast.
If you have all kinds of gut issues and are doing a 7 day water fast for the purpose of healing, the idea of having milk in your coffee is kind of counter to this end in mind. Milk is a tough thing to digest. You’re just interfering with your body’s ability to heal itself efficiently by consuming this stuff.
If you’re really interested in healing, probably best to not even drink coffee at all. Give your body a rest from the caffeine. See if your sleep improves. That’ll improve the overall effectiveness of your fast.
If you’re just doing a 16:8 protocol to lose some extra weight but still want to have a tiny splash of milk in your coffee in the morning, it’s probably going to have such a small effect on your overall objective that it’s fine to keep doing.
At the end of the day, there’s no hard and fast rules here. It’s up to you to use your own discretion for the most part.
